"Handmade Cultural Souvenirs Competition" with support from the Bi-communal Development Programme funded by USAID and UNDP and executed by UNOPS

This project proposes to organize and hold a "Handmade Cultural Souvenirs" contest and a follow-up exhibition to exhibit the submitted works. The aim is to motivate artists, artisans and craftsmen to produce works based on and inspired by traditional hand crafts thereby contributing to the preservation of crafts and promoting their continued production. By having the contest open to both Turkish and Greek Cypriot contestants, we also aim to promote the shared heritage of the two communities and contribute to inter-communal rapprochement.

The objectives of this project are to contribute to the production of traditional hand crafts which is shared heritage of the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities in a way that would be beneficial to both; to renew interest in, spread and enrich the production of traditional hand crafts that are on the verge of disappearance by motivating artists and craftsmen; to contribute to the development of new designs based on and inspired by traditional designs; to motivate artists and craftsman to innovate in finding new outlets and markets for their creations such as souvenirs.

The project will consist of a "Handmade Cultural Souvenirs" contest and a follow-up exhibition of the submitted works. There will be four different categories participants can compete in based on the dominant raw material used in the products. These are as follows:

  • Wood and wood curving

  • Textile and hand wowing

  • Plant material and wicker

  • Mixed and other materials

The contest will be open to both Turkish and Greek Cypriot artists, designers and craftsmen. Announcements for the contest will appear in the press and media on both sides. There will be two prizes in each category. Both prizes will be monetary prizes, one being the "Grand Prize" (1500 USD) and the other an "Honourable Mention" (500 USD). The jury will be chosen by HASDER and will comprise of Greek and Turkish Cypriot experts and professionals who have knowledge and experience in this area. Utmost attention will be paid towards a just evaluation and decision.

Following the contest, an exhibition will be held of the entries deemed worthy. The same jury will decide which entries are worthy of exhibition. Folk Arts Institute products will also be exhibited in a separate section.

The prizes will be given out to the winners at a reception to be held at the opening of the exhibition.
